Private: Cycle Safety Events 2015/16

July 16, 2020

Cantillon is a firm believer in our safety strapline: “demolition and safety hand in hand”. This doesn’t just apply ‘on site’, this spreads to the whole surrounding environment: on, around and near all our sites and encompasses both our people and the general public.

Throughout 2015, Cantillon have held multiple cycle safety events nearby our sites at Old Street and within campus at the London School of Economics, as well as a number of our smaller sites. Cantillon staff are all aware of the dangers of cycling on London roads through regular cycle safety talks with the company Cycle Champion. All our vehicle drivers have undertaken cycle awareness courses.

At a ‘Cycle Event’ you will find the Met police in attendance with an HGV lorry cab for ‘exchanging places’ – this is where cyclists and pedestrians are invited to sit in the cab and are shown how many blind spots there despite all the measures that are taken, are and how difficult it is to be seen, but equally how to make yourself more visible and sensible around large vehicles.

A woman at the Old Street Roundabout event had this to say following her stint in the lorry cab: “It’s a very sobering experience – I was surprised by how much they can’t see”.

At these events the Met Police also offer bike tagging / marking for security purposes and Bike Mechanics are also available to MOT bikes and help with any issues, ensuring bikes are safe for use.

London cycle maps are given out providing suggestions on quieter and safer routes. Breakfast and refreshments are usually on offer too!

In 2016 Cantillon are looking to further promote cycling awareness and will be running more frequent cycle awareness events, nearby to our busy London sites. Further details will be posted via the website/ facebook / twitter.
