| The end is in sight at Stonebridge! | |||
After a decade on site, Cantillon is now approaching the end of its controlled demolition of the Stonebridge Estate, North London. Having removed many tower blocks over the years, the two remaining blocks will be gone by August 2010 – the rest of the area has been regenerated to ensure a brighter future for the community. Over the years, Cantillon’s operatives have developed strong ties to the estate. Their work has required the very best in their technical expertise – the estate itself is situated on two sides of a major traffic route and all of the skills associated with city demolition, from safety to logistical management, were pivotal. Though Cantillon has removed many elements of the estate, such as pedestrian walkways, the majority of the work has been in the controlled demolition of the 7, 13 and 16 storey towers of the estate. This has required a full range of skills, as the buildings required asbestos removal, soft stripping and controlled structural demolition. To do this the towers were scaffolded and sheeted. They were then demolished floor by floor with mini excavators. The ground slab and foundations of the buildings have also been removed to a depth of two metres. David Strzelecki, Cantillon’s project manager at the site, commented: “It’s not often you get to spend so long at a site. We might be in the business of demolition, but we’ve certainly built excellent relationships with the local community here. Seeing the positive change to the area, a direct result of our work, means that we always go home satisfied at the end of the day. I think we’ll be a bit sad to move on to the next job!” |
