Cantillon key to Islington regeneration

Cantillon’s expert skills in urban demolition have proved critical in the £190million redevelopment of Islington’s troubled Packington Square Estate.

The scheme is a joint venture between social housing specialist The Hyde Group and community developer Rydon Construction Ltd. Regenerating the canal side Packington Square Estate with fit for purpose social and private housing, Islington’s community will benefit from an inspirational built environment that will draw investment to the area and stimulate employment.

Spread across five phases, the scheme is currently in its second phase. Cantillon had previously been responsible for some enabling works on the first elements of the work, and its effective practice led to it being awarded a contract for the current phase of the project.

Cantillon is providing a variety of expertise to the scheme, including asbestos removal, soft strip and the controlled demolition of structures. This includes the demolition of entire blocks as well as complex and technically demanding deconstruction of wings of blocks without affecting the integrity of the occupied structural elements to remain. As there was a fear that the buildings would collapse during work – due to the nature of their construction – all activities were carefully controlled and managed to avoid this.

The scheme is well suited to Cantillon’s abilities. Not only do the various tasks require a great deal of industry experience to complete successfully, but the city central location of the Packington Square Estate also required superb logistical management to remove all soft strip materials for recycling, whilst hard demolition materials were processed on site.

Cantillon holds a wealth of experience in urban regeneration projects. Thanks to its work, the Packington Square Estate can look forward to a brighter future.
